R'n'r guru takes on troubled weekender

RESCUED BY KAV

Kav Kavanagh is "taking a huge gamble" to run this year's JiveJiveJive Weekend in Reading. A question mark hung over the long-running event after a low turnout in 2007. The top DJ, promoter and jive guru said:
"We've saved JiveJiveJive.
Better late than never, it's going ahead with me and Suzy Q at the helm and with the full support of its originators, the 3Rs club and the previous organisers, but it's a somewhat huge gamble.

"The non-profit-making organisers had such huge overheads the weekend wasn't likely to be financially viable any more. We've made some huge cuts in the overspending and enlisted the help of friends in the industry to pull off a revamp of the weekend. We've renegotiated with the venue who are working with us to get it off the ground again. It usually sells out with the exception of last year due to the heavy downpours, but we are optimistic for the future."

The weekend will be trimmed to two days - May 24th and 25th - at the Rivermead Leisure Complex in Richfield Avenue. On the bill are The Kingcats, Crazy Jay & The Partytimers, Danny Fisher, The Hustlers, The Koolkatz and The Kavemen. DJs include Wildcat Pete, Pete Bruce and Suzy Q.
Jive Jive Jive was started in 1994 by founder members of Reading's 3Rs rock'n'roll club. Following the death of 3Rs President Bill Cotterell in January 2005, Hemsby promoters Willie and Varick Jeffrey were drafted in.

Now Kav says he will uphold the event's long tradition: "We have made as little change as possible. For the first time we are introducing a weekend pass to pre bookers and held last year's door prices. We hope the line up is attractive enough for the dancers to want to come back again knowing we are dancers too and understand their requirements. We hope to offer the same value for money and special deals with local hotels and camping facilities as before and improve on them wherever we can within our financial limits. It's pretty short notice, but if we break even this year it will be a success. Then there's next year... Watch this space!"
